Abstract
The use of corpora in language learning is moving from a fringe interest to the mainstream within the United States. In this talk I will demonstrate the use of a concordancer, MonoConc Pro and a collocation extraction program, Collocate, and provide an overview of the use of corpora in language learning, focussing on (i) the use of corpora in materials development, (ii) the use of corpus-materials in the classroom, and (iii) the relevance of learner corpora. In the second part of the talk, I will concentrat
e on more theoretical issues, namely the fit between corpus data and theories of language learning and consequences of corpus analyses for our conception of what it means to know a language.
